Guest Entry by Elizabeth Sy

elizabeth here: hello peoples of wanderlust

in my day to day life, i often have to step up to coordinate events, try to convince judges to release girls from juvenile hall, cook seven-course meals for networking dinner parties and convince people that yes, what i am doing is great and for sure, you definitely want to fund this project.

one of the best things about the trip with nora/rhonda thus far, is that i don’t need to be that point person anymore.

it’s nice to be able to follow someone’s else’s lead for a while.  it’s nice to be able to choose how much i want to talk (or not) about myself and the work that i do or my politics.  it’s nice to be able to just listen to other people talk about themselves and be amazed by the work that they do.

sometimes i think that i’ve been struggling so hard to have a voice and have the issues that i think are important voiced in certain groups that i often forget to just enjoy observing and being in the background.

so here are some things that i notice: i often want to speak because i want people to think that i am interesting and because i want to feel more connected to people, i haven’t been speaking that much about myself because i’ve been waiting for people to ask me direct questions and they usually don’t because they’re so fascinated with nora (who wouldn’t be?), the great people we’ve talked to on this trip so far get really excited and animated when they talk about the work that they do, chicago is a beautiful city, the full moon tonight against the electric blue sky was breath taking, crappy streets + 22 mile bike ride + underwear with seams and jeans = ouch!

today i was in a room full of people that were talking but was observing quietly when i heard the soft pulsing of a bullet vibrator.  and you know what?  it was beautiful.

I like this blog entry because it reminds me of times when I’d see young Ms. Sy holding court, talking about the things that fascinate her, and she’d be one of those great people getting really excited and animated about the things she does. On the other hand, I’d also like to know what a bullet vibrator sounds like. I imagine it’d make the every day buzz and whirr of computers at my office that much more interesting.
